Building your vocabulary
One of the things that many people will often suggest when you are trying to learn English is to build your vocabulary. This sounds simple however often learners will find that they can generally get by with only learning a few hundred words in the English language.
Additionally, while learning new words is part of the OSSD curriculum, this can often be done in an informal manor or in an ESL where you might have specific vocabulary building activities/tests. When reading texts you might learn a new word, hopefully more than a few new words. The problem can often be remembering those words you learn or finding out if those words will serve you a purpose in the future.
One of the best things you can do to solve these issues is to keep a log of new words that you are learning and circle those words that you like. This will help create your own distinct style of writing, which should be a goal of every student. Word choice plays a huge role in how you choose to communicate your ideas to others. The second thing you may choose to do, once you have created a log for words you want to learn is to talk with your OSSD teacher and ask them questions regarding the use of these words. You might like the sound of a word or simply just want to learn more words to hopefully get a higher mark, however an issue might occur when choosing to use that word.
Rage and Anger both mean the same thing. However, when using the word Rage, it often indicates a more troubling level of anger. Slim and lean mean the same this as well, but one has more of a positive outlook. Thus, while it is very important to develop your vocabulary, you must also know how to use those words. Another tip for developing your vocabulary is to learn more transition words. This can help you organize your AOLs better but can again set the tone for how formal or informal you want to convey your ideas.
The last point I would like to make with regards to building your vocabulary is that it does not have to be boring. One of the easiest ways to learn new words is to read. Did I mention this will also help you spell better, write better….and of course read better! Shocking!! I know when I went to high school the last thing I wanted to do is read more, since I already had so much schoolwork. However, reading does not have to be boring, you can pick any fiction/nonfiction book you want. You do not have to read for very long and reading can be only part of a hobby you want to try. Like building things read “How to build…..” books. Like working out, read up on different fitness plans or meal plans. This can be done casually and with little to no expectation of having to memorize or even apply information.
What will happen is that you will be able to recall words that you did not know you learned, your reading will get better, you will develop more curiosity (which is so important) and you will find writing OSSD AOLS more manageable.
Happy Learning!
